Tupuārangi relates to kai (food) that comes from the sky. Birds are very significant to Māori both as birds as well as the feathers being woven into clothing and adornments. As it relates to kai one of the most popular birds to be eaten prior to the introduction of European animals was the Kererū. The majority of Matariki practises are to do with kai and the harvesting of kai.
